Someone whose intellectual ability I respect a lot recently answered someone who suggested that Jonathan should not be reelected, with the question: “WHO IS THE BETTER ALTERNATIVE to PRESIDENT JONATHAN GOODLUCK?”

Eseentially this well meaning individual felt that we really dont have any credible alternative to President Johnathan and therefore by default he should get reelected so that we can avoid something he referred to as the ‘ANYTheory’ (by this he meant it was wrong for us to elect ANYBODY else simply as a reaction to our dislike for the Jonathan Presiency…..)

While I did engage him in a very interesting debate on this point on Facebook, I am sufficiently intrigued enough that I have decided to post my entire reponse to him on my blog for the records and for other people’s comments…. So here is my response on the question “WHO IS THE BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO JONATHAN?’ head on:

With all due respect my friend, the question you should be asking is NOT who is the better alternative to Jonathan Goodluck. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF BETTER ALTERNATIVES. EVEN YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN PRESIDENT JONATHAN. Any of the other candidates have the POTENTIAL TO DO BETTER THAN JONATHAN. Afterall you really cant score below zero.

Of course, the ‘ANY’ alternatives may NOT LIVE UP To A BETTER POTENTIAL IN THE END, BUT ONE THING WE ARE SURE OF: A LEOPARD CANNOT CHANGE ITS SKIN. So we know FOR A FACT, from what we have witnessed in the last 6 years, that returning Jonathan as President of Nigeria is BASICALLY guaranteeing another 4 years of the disaster we have witnessed as a nation in many areas in last 6 years (unless of course you genuinely beleive Nigeria has done well in last 6 years). SO WHY NOT TRY SOMEONE ELSE?

Jonathan should be JUDGED on his own MERIT as a sitting President and NOT in terms of potential of others who are yet to take the oath of office as President. So, instead of asking the dispairing question of there not being a credible alternative, the question that we should be asking is:

– Why should we celebrate the man who ruled us with a shameful record of 1 Fraud and 1 scandal EVERY WEEK for 8 years in government?

– Why should we bring back a President who presided over a 60% uneployment rate among recent graduates ( it does not matter if he is NOT directly responsible. HE IS THE PRESIDENT and must take the blame like it is done in all civilized societies).

– Why should we reelect a man who surrounds himself with convicted looters of our treasury, and even gives them NATIONAL AWARDS? (i DONT NEED TO GIVE YOU NAMES. YOU CAN GOOGLE YOURSELF IN CASE YOU DONT KNOW)

– Why should we vote for a man who pardons an international crook like Alamsiegha and then puts HIM in a constituional conference and also gives him the HIGHEST AWARD IN THE LAND? Does that fact by itself not want to make you throw up?

– Why should we relect a man who PROMISED he would not run for reeection on TAPE AND IN WRITING and then denied? Basically he is a LIAR TOO – Why reward an inept president with another 4 years? Do you reelect somebody because you dont believe others are better when they are yet to rule? You may not be sure what the others would do but YOU are definitely sure Jonathan is NOT competent. So, why not change him and take your chances?

– Why reward a President who cannot control Terrorists or Boko Haram’s daily bombing but chose instead to blame his opponents. For God’s sake HE IS THE PRESIDENT. If he really believes his opponents are the ones behind it, why not simply ROUND THEM UP AND LOCK THEM UP AFTER SHOWING NIGERIANS  THE PROBABLE EVIDENCE AGAINST THEM? THERE ARE ENOUGH SECURITY LAWS THAT WOULD ALLOW HIM TO DO that for AT LEAST A FEW DAYS.

This terrorism thing is NOT a joke and so far all I see is a blame casting president who has generals running away from the battlefield while boko haram annexes local governments after local government?

Lets Judge him on his own merit as opposed to comparing him to others who have not even been tested yet as President.

This may be HardTalk, but it is true talk nevertheless.
