CONTROVERY ERUPTS AS NOLLYWOOD PLANS TO NOMINATE PATIENCE JONATHAN FOR AMAA AWARDS IN 2015

In a stranger than fiction development in Nigeria’s film Industry, it has been leaked that that some members of the Awards nominating committee of the African Movie Awards, Afirca’s largest Movie Awards, are planning to nominate the wife of the Nigerian President, Patience Jonathan, for awards in the forthcoming AMAA Awards as a result of her hilarious grammatical commentaries that has captivated the nation.

It has ben further leaked that the AMAA nominators who are weighing this option, after meeting and mingling with the President Jonathan for some days, are basing their arguments on Dame Jonathan’s eligibility for the award recognition, on the fact that while she may not have acted in any Nollywood Movies, she has been a very effective comedian actress on the political terrain, even without intending to be an actress.

While this may sound ridiculous to be nominating the first lady for movie awards, when she has never acted in any movie, the proponents of this award nomination are arguing that there is nothing wrong in nominating her based on their personal observations of her exploits on the political terrain.

Many of those fighting to have the esteemed 1st Lady honored by Nollywood have argued that “after all, she was appointed and sworn in as a PERMAENT SECRETARY in Bayelsa though she has not worked in that state for more than 7 years, having followed her husband to Abuja as Vice President, and later as President’’. According to the nominators ‘If she can be recognized as a solid administrator and sworn in as Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa when she was actually living and assisting her husband in Abuja for more than 7 years, why can’t Nollywood give her an honorary award as the best political comedian of 2015?”

While several Nollywood practitioners see no problem in honoring the first lady alongside Mr. Ibu and Nkem Owoh, many serious practitioners in the industry have decried this planned nomination. According to one of the true legends in the industry ‘This will be a travesty of legendary proportions to drag Nollywood into the political process by giving awards to someone who has never acted a movie, but makes a fool of herself in pubic”.

Another veteran said “if they nominate Dame Jonathan, you can be sure I won’t be attending such a comical farce. Nollywood is trying to portray itself as a serious industry and not a laughable political tool”

For those who may be wondering why Dame Jonathan’s name could ever have become relevant in Nollywood awards, here are some of the quotable quotes from our first lady that would seem to support her case as being a great comedian, though mostly inadvertent on her part. Perhaps her lack of formal education and poor grasp of the English language has unwittingly made her a credible candidate for Nollywood awards. Judge for yourself:

  1. “My husband and Sambo is a good people”.
  2. “The President was once a child and the Senators were once a children”.
  3. “My fellow widows. (Is her husband dead?)”
  4. “A good mother takes care of his children.”
  5. “The people sitting before you were once a children.”
  6. “Yes we are all happy for the effort, it is not easy to carry second in an International competition like this one, (addressing press men after Female Under-19 FIFA World Cup).”
  7. “The bombers who born them? Wasn’t it not a woman? They were once a children now a adult now they are bombing women and children making some children a widow.”
  8. “My heart feels sorry for these children who have become widows for loosing their parents for one reason or another.”
  9. “We should have love for our fellow Nigerians irrespective of their NATIONALITY”
  10. “Thank God the Doctors and Nurses are responding to treatment.”
  11. “I would rather kill myself instead of committing suicide.”
  12. “Ojukwu is a great man, he died but his manhood lives on.”
  13. “On behalf of 2million, I donate my family.”
  14. “Why will book haram bom blast churches on Christmas day, they don’t have respect for Jesus, they are a very bad person, infact I’m a sadder woman right now and Mr. President is more saddest”
  15. “vote UMBLERRA and press your finger for UMBLERRA .”
  16. “We don’t give change since we are not conductors”
  17. “Anyone ask you for change or talk about change around you, STONE THEM!”
  18. “Na only you waka come?”

19 “The bloods of innocent sharing that they are sharing… there is god o”

Now, what do you think? Do you think that Dame Jonathan should be given an honorary Award by Nollywood? or do you think this is taking the political game too far?
