The Buhari Coup Of 1984 And The Selective Memory Of Nigerians

By on January 25, 2015

JUST BEFORE WE VOTE…WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR COLECTIVE MEMORIES OF THE EVENTS OF 1984?

I have read over and over again how many Nigerians are saying people should not vote for Buhari because of his actions as a military head of state 1984-1985. Many propagandists, including the shameless Femi Fani-Kayode, and his soul brother in miscommunication, Doyin Okupe, have somehow hoodwinked many Nigerians into believing that Buhari was a very ‘bad’ man who imprisoned ‘innocent’ politicians like Shehu Shagari, Umaru Dikko and many of the politicians in the 1984 coup.

REALLY, It is amazing how many of us Nigerians have selective memories or no memories at all of the past.

I was a student of GREAT IFE at the time of the Buhari coup in 1984 and I remember VERY WELL how we all took to the streets to WELCOME Buhari and Idiagbon with placards, jubilating and celebrating THE COMING OF THE MILITARY to rescue us from the corrupt the gang of Shehu Shagari, the Akinloyes, the Barkin Zuwos and the Umari Dikkos of the time.

I also remember how all Nigerians were asking for the BLOOD of the corrupt politicians at the time. Most Nigerians actually prayed for a RAWLINGS STYLE of coup because of the hardship then (which was really child’s play to what we have now)

Even when the kidnapping of Umaru Dikko in a crate failed, PEOPLE WERE SAD IT FAILED AND MOST DID NOT CRITICISE Buhari then for trying to bring him to justice because Umaru Dikko was the PERSONIFICATION OF CORRUPTION at the time who masterminded the systematic looting of our commonwealth

I am amazed that after 30 years, Shagari and Umaru Dikko and his gang of thieves have suddenly become ‘saints’ in the minds of Nigerians and Buhari is now the ‘devil’ who put ‘innocent’ people in jail. Surely, Buhari is definitely far from perfect and there were definitely questionable actions in his reign as Head of State (the 53 suitcases of an Emir that passed through the airport was a blackspot for sure) but NOBODY CAN DENY he fought a gallant war agaisnt corruption and there was discipline in the land.

BUT REGARDLESS OF WHAT WE REMEMBER OR NOW, TIME WILL TELL.

Those who see the evil of corruption and choose to support it, and curse those trying to put an end to it BECOS OF THEIR PERSONAL GAINS OR EXPECTATION OF PATRONAGE will eventually hear from God at some point.

Those who looked at the direction our country has taken in the last 6 years on critical issues such as CORRUPTION, NEPOTISM, INSECURITY, UNEMPLOYMENT, POWER FAILURE AND a N205 TO $1 ECONOMY but continue to say we should have 4 more of the same are definitely entitled to their opinion but at some point the cries of hte blood Nigerians and the wasted generation of our youths will reach heaven and God will speak vengeance.

As a God fearing person, I will continue to pray along with others that God’s Will should prevail on our nation and that God’s perfect Will be done in the coming elections. I also pray fervently that we should have PEACE and not war this year regardless of winner and loser, but all those who chose to KNOWINGLY PERVERT THE TRUTH will at some point account to their God. If they like let them have the blessings of 10,000 Bishops or Pastors of this world.

I have also read how different ‘respected’ men of God are harboring, endorsing and praying for corrupt leaders in our land but I remain consolate in the fact that THE ALMIGHTY GOD definitely is BIGGER than any MAN OF GOD. So I am not worried at all as about who is endorsing who. All I pray for is PEACE IN OUR LAND and for God to rid our country of CORRUPT PEOPLE IN GOVT who are hiding under the bibles of some of our so-called religious leaders.

We know God did ask us to pray for our Leaders, but that is definitely conditioned on those leaders being just and doing His Will. On the other hand, we also read in many instances of hte bible where God actually sent HIS MEN to go and PRONOUNCE JUDGMENT OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION  ON CORRUPT LEADERS and prophesy their violent removal for their iniquity. Sadly, very few of our current Men of God so far have had the courage to stand against evil in our times. Rather, many would rather hide under the inapplicable injunction that we should pray for our leaders without asking them what happened to the collective wealth of our nation.

When evil is thriving in the land, it is not time for positive prayers against oppressors. It is a time to prophesy doom and gloom to them, and assure them of the coming vengeance of the ONLY one who is Just.

One thing is sure, and that is my consolation, GOD DOES NOT HAVE SELECTIVE MEMORY, AND IN DUE COURSE, ALL OF US WILL GIVE ACCOUNT INCLUDING JONATHAN, BUHARI, BISHOPS AND PASTORS, AND NIGERIANS TOO, FOR EVERYTHING WE SAY

The History-Spinners of our time like Doyin Okupe, Femi Fani-Kayode and Reuben Abati may twist history anyway they want, eventually the TRUTH will prevail and they themselves would be swept into the rubbish heap of the same history.

This may be HardTalk, but it is True Talk nevertheless

it’s even not just about GEJ OR JB.For a government who has ruled for 16 years and nothing to show for it but excuses,
what we ask for and we fight for is another party to try, and let’s see if Competition among the political parties will make a significant difference.
